I had a severe flare of RA in April and May 2011. It was my first real experience of RA and the consultant called it an explosive onset. Many of my joints were completely frozen solid. Ever since that I have had trigger finger in my little and ring fingers on both hands. It is worse first thing in the morning. Do other people think it will settle down in time or will it get worse? Is there anything I can do to reverse it? I was only formally diagnosed less than 2 weeks ago and am waiting to go on methotrexate. I am on my second course of oral prednisolone and the trigger fingers persist.

Hi Naomi,

I have had steroid injections into two of my fingers for trigger finger and both were successful.
If yours persist maybe your consultant will consider the injections?

Hello

There should somewhere be a post from me on this. Over the past couple months I had the joints on
several of my fingers 'sticking'. When I saw my Doctor in general about my RA - he said that
it was called trigger finger and appears to go along with RA. Well thats what my GP said ?
He also said I could have steriod injection in them, but as yet I have held of.

I've had this too, Naomi, and like Doreen says, a steroid jab in each finger will help enormously. xx

Hi Naomi,

Hurt like hell don't they, I havn't had any real pain for nearly 8 months now, but last night the pain was a 9/10 on the fingers and wrist of the right hand. Really hope the MTX is not failing. If it continues I think a steriod jab will be the order the day.

Hello Naomi- I had each finger in turn go as trigger fingers and this was well before I got diagnosed with RA. the steroid injections didn't do it for me and I subsequently had very successful operations on each one with no return of the symptoms.
I also made a home made splint to wear on my finger at night to keep it straight because that was when it used to bend inwards and it was so painful to try and uncurl it in the mornings.
YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

I like the idea of night splints as my fingers are so much worse in the morning. I will ask about these at my next appointment. My colleague had a steroid injection into her foot and she said it was agony. Ever since I have been terrified of having one. Is there any way to have it done painlessly as I'm not sure I can face it otherwise. I am slightly needle phobic but can manage blood tests if I lie down. However I don't think I can face this. I know it's silly and I should pull myself together but I just can't. I don't mind the thought of pain after the injection but I can't face the thought of pain whilst it is going in. I actually feel nauseous and faint just thinking about it.
